PRD mayor murdered in Mexican state of Oaxaca

The PRD Mayor of Ocotlán de Morelos municipality in Oaxaca, Mexico José Villanueva Rodríguez, was shot and killed on 17 December 2016 (Excelsior). Villanueva Rodríguez received at least eight shots from point-blank range and witnesses reported the culprits fled a red explorer-type vehicle (Excelsior and Proceso). Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat condemned the attack and called for an immediate operation to secure surrounding areas and apprehend those responsible (Excelsior and Proceso). Villanueva Rodríguez died en route to hospital due to the severity of his injuries and was set to complete his term as Mayor on 31 December 2016 (Proceso). 

Mexican states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Aguascalientes swear in new governors

The Mexican states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Aguascalientes swore in new governors on 1 December 2016 (24 Horas). PAN members Martín Orozco Sandoval and Miguel Ángel Yunes Linares assumed roles as Governor in Aguascalientes and Veracruz, respectively. PRI politician Alejandro Murat Hinojosa took the oath as Governor of Oaxaca and promised to move the state forward during an early morning ceremony that took place secretly to avoid planned teacher union protests. Yunes Linares will serve a two-year term to 2018 in Veracruz while Orozco Sandoval and Murat Hinojosa will hold office until 2022 (24 Horas, Excelsior, La Jornada).
