President Martinelli withdraws controversial bill

On 19 June 2012, President Ricardo Martinelli withdrew a bill from Congress that would allow for the sale of 49 percent of government shares in electricity and telecommunications companies. The bill has ignited criticism from members of the opposition party, who have charged President Martinelli with attempting to sell state assets to gather campaign resources towards a 2014 reelection bid.
