Penitentiary official accused of facilitating prisoner escape

On 4 December 2012, public prosecutors presented Penitentiary Services Ministry Director Álvaro Marcano Báez before the Control Court of the Caracas Metropolitan Area for allegedly facilitating the escape of Emiliano José Zapata. According to the preliminary investigation, Marcano Báez allegedly falsified the signatures of the Security General Director and Custodial Minister in a release allowing the transfer of Zapata and Eddy Blanco Burgos from El Rodeo to the General Penitentiary of Venezuela (PGV).
