On 28 December 2012, Observatory of Violence in Venezuela (OVV) director Robert Briceño León stated that a member of the security forces died each day in Venezuela. León reported that Venezuela is among the most violent countries in Latin America, with a homicide rate of 72 people killed per 100,000, more than triple the level of other countries in Latin America with a reputation for violence such as Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. León speculated that a loss in respect for authority could be responsible for the increase in violence against security forces.
