Nicaragua, U.S. to collaborate on counternarcotics operations

On 27 November 2012, the Nicaraguan government authorized U.S. naval vessels to operate in Nicaraguan maritime territory in order to participate in joint counternarcotics operations in areas awarded to Nicaragua by the International Court of Justice the ICJ. The military operations are to be carried out jointly beginning on 1 January 2013 and lasting until 30 June 2013. For her part, Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister María Ángela Holguín stated during a session at the lower chamber of Congress that Colombian vessels have not moved from meridian 82 and that no Nicaraguan ships have been seen in the immediate areas surrounding Serranilla cay.
