New Interior Minister to bolster anti-narcoterrorism strategy in VRAE region
On 15 May 2012, new Interior Minister Wilber Calle Girpón announced plans to bolster the country’s anti-narcoterrorism strategy in the Apurímac-Ene River Valley (VRAE). The new plan will pursue greater social inclusion, bolster education, and foster alternative
opportunities to steer residents of the VRAE away from coca cultivation. Girpón noted that the National Police would continue to be responsible for securing the region and establishing order.
