General Directorate of Prisons considers use of electronic bracelets

On 2 November 2012, it was reported that the General Directorate of Prisons is studying a bill by Senator Roxana Camargo proposing the use of electronic bracelets as a precautionary measure for suspects and house arrest cases, in order to avoid overcrowding the prison system. Pending a judicial ruling, the bracelets would be expected to function as sensors connected to landline telephones, although they are projected to work by satellite in the future, using a chip registering the suspects and their location, allowing the prison system to save money in detainees.
