Defense Ministry initiates operation on northern border

On 2 May 2012, the Defense Ministry initiated Operation Ágata 4 along the northern borders with Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, involving 8,500 military personnel and over 100 police officers. The operation, directed from the Comando Militar da Amazônia (CMA), is part of the Strategic Plan for Borders, launched in June 2011 by President Dilma Rousseff.
