Mexican military plans new barracks in Guanajuato

In a bid to strengthen security in the Mexican State of Guanajuato, the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA) announced on 13 November 2016 that new military barracks will be built on a 60-hectare site in the municipality of Léon (El Sol de Mexico). The new facility, Cuartel Militar de León, will be located in the community of Albarradones and provide security to the León-Silao corridor. General Pedro Felipe Gurrola Ramírez revealed 800 soldiers would be permanently stationed in the barracks and contribute to combating recent spikes in crime, including railroad robbery and theft on Pemex oil pipelines. Gurrola Ramírez also noted the strategically placed barracks would be modern, featuring the latest technology for their operations (Excelsior). Military engineers will begin work in December 2016 with completion estimated for mid-2017 (Pulso).
