Nearly eight weeks following the controversial 31 August 2016 meeting with U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on 24 October acknowledged mistakes made surrounding the organization of the encounter (Vanguardia). Peña Nieto faced backlash from various sectors in Mexico not only for holding the meeting, but also for not challenging Trump on his remarks about Mexican immigrants, which many in the country found offensive (Sin Embargo and Expansión). The Mexican President took responsibility for the way the meeting played out and claimed he would have done things in a different way if he had the opportunity to do it again (Expansión).
