Venezuelan electoral authority postpones regional elections until 2017

Tibisay Lucena, head of Venezuela's Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE), announced on 18 October 2016 that regional elections originally set to take place in 2016 were postponed to 2017. Although the Constitution mandates that gubernatorial elections be held in 2016, these elections were delayed to mid-2017, and municipal elections were postponed to the end of the second half of 2017 (Efecto Cocuyo). Lucena did not cite a reason for the postponements and did not make any announcements about the 26-28 October collection of signatures to hold a recall referendum against President Nicolás Maduro (Tal Cual).
