US presidential race helps strengthen the Mexican peso

Market confidence following the second United States presidential debate helped the Mexican peso make a US$0.02 gain from 7 October to 14 October 2016 (El Diario de Juárez, 15 October). The peso closed at 19.30 units per USD on 14 October despite strengthening to 18.79 pesos per USD during midweek trading. The peso has improved by 5.73 percent during the past three weeks, which Banco Base analyst Gabriela Siller claimed is due to stronger investor belief in a Hillary Clinton victory in the US presidential race (El Universal). Other factors influencing the gains for the peso were increased consumer confidence in the US and a weakened Chinese export sector (El Diario de Juárez).
